With over 12 million followers and a billion views and counting on YouTube, Zoella is one of the brightest stars in the vlogging community. In addition to her hugely successful YouTube channel, she has a second channel called MoreZoella which is nearly as popular.
Depending on the type of video she’s shooting that day, she uses one of two different cameras. Zoella uses either a Canon Powershot S120 or a Canon EOS 70D.
Canon Powershot S120
The S120 is a great little point and shoot, emphasis on little. Weighing in at just under ½ a pound and measuring 100.2 x 59.0 x 29.0mm, the S120 fits practically anywhere.
The S120 packs tons of advanced features inside of its tiny frame. It shoots at 12.1 megapixels, features an incredibly powerful CMOS sensor, 5x zoom, and a large 3” high-resolution touchscreen display.
Beyond the more technical features, the Powershot S120 offers plenty of intuitive features that will automatically make your photos and videos better.
This Canon features fully automatic face, motion and auto scene detection and continuous auto focusing. Thanks to those features, even a beginner vlogger will be able to produce beautiful videos with the S120.
- CMOS sensor
- 12.1 megapixels
- DIGIC 6 image processor
- HS System for enhanced low light performance
- 1080p/60p full HD video
- 5x optical zoom
- Auto face, motion and scene detection
- Continuous autofocus
- Built In Wi-Fi
What We Think
The S120 is difficult to beat if you’re a beginner vlogger looking for a quality camera that you can produce great videos. It’s full of useful features you’re going to need, and the automatic face, motion and scene detection add to the quality of video you’re able to capture.
It’s also small and lightweight, so you’ll be able to transport the camera anywhere you go. It’s not the cheapest point and shoot you can find, but at a retail price of around $450, it’s far from the most expensive. At that price, it’s a definite value.
If you’re a more advanced vlogger already, you may want to consider a camera with a little bit more capability in the video department.
The S120 does shoot in full 1080p at 60fps, but it doesn’t do well with slow motion. In slow motion the S120 can shoot 120fps at 480p and 240fps at 240p. For that reason, the S120 might not be the best choice if you shoot lots of action videos.
Overall, if you’re just getting started, or if you’re looking for a trusty camera that’s ready when you are, the S120 is a viable option.
Canon EOS 70D
What camera does Zoella use for vlogging? In addition to her Canon S120, she also uses the Canon EOS 70D. The EOS 70D is an incredibly powerful DSLR camera that Canon has optimized for video shooting.
It’s one of the most popular DSLR’s on the market, and it's a favorite of some of YouTube's elite vloggers.
Unlike other DSLR cameras that are designed primarily to take photos, the 70D performs well as a video camera as well. Inside, the 70D is packed with class-leading features like a 20.2-megapixel APS-C dual pixel CMOS sensor, up to 10x digital zoom, built-in wifi, and impressively sharp HD video capture.
Once you look through what’s under the hood of the EOS 70D, you’ll find plenty of other helpful features that vloggers are sure to love. For one, the dual pixel autofocus allows you to capture perfect videos each time you shoot.
The rotating display is another useful feature and lets you see what your viewers are going to see as you shoot videos. This Canon also allows you to hook up an external microphone, which will help you capture audio quality that far exceeds what the onboard microphone in the camera is capable of.
- APS-C Dual Pixel CMOS sensor
- 20.2 megapixels
- Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus
- 3x-10x digital zoom
- 3” Rotating touch screen LCD
- Shoots full HD video at 24/25 or 30fps
- Built in Wi-Fi
What We Think
Overall, the EOS 70D is an incredibly powerful DSLR camera that’s full of useful features for vloggers. If you’re into photography as well, this Canon is one of the most impressive cameras on the market.
We loved features like the rotating touch screen, external microphone port and built in Wi-Fi. But, this camera is much bigger than any of the point and shoot options you may be looking at.
The EOS 70D comes in at 139.0 x 104.3 x 78.5mm and weighs 26.7 ounces. That makes the 70D about 3.5 times as heavy as the S120, or similar point and shoot cameras. The EOS 70D also doesn’t come cheap, with a retail price of around $1200.
How Zoella Uses Each Camera
What camera does Zoella use for vlogging? That depends on the situation she’s shooting.
For her channel MoreZoella, she usually uses the Canon Powershot S120. Her videos for that channel are mainly daily updates, which feature Zoella in different scenarios that require a portable and easy to use camera.
While the Canon EOS 70D is a fantastic camera, it’s also big, heavy and can be a pain in the butt to carry around. Since the S120 is so compact, it’s the perfect camera for Zoella’s day to day shooting.
For her main channel which features more fashion and beauty tips, Zoella typically shoots at home and uses the more powerful DSLR camera – the 70D.
The DSLR is packed with even more features than the S120 and features some of the best video capturing of any camera on the market that’s good for vlogging. But, it’s much bigger and a bit more clunky than the S120, so it’s better suited for the videos Zoella shoots at home.
