How to Change Your YouTube Name to One Word

In order to create a successful YouTube channel, you’ll need to create an identifiable brand. Your channel’s name plays a big part in developing a brand people will remember.

Changing your YouTube name to just one word is possible and we’re here to help. Here’s how to change your YouTube name to one word – as well as everything else you need to know about your YouTube channel name.

The YouTube Naming Policy

Your YouTube username is the word or phrase which displays on your channel and every posted video. In most cases, the username is the obvious name of the person or product (PewDiePie, Target, etc.)

Once picked, you can’t technically change the username for your channel. But notice how we said “technically.”

There are three workarounds available:

  • Create a New Account
  • Change the “Name” Box in Your YouTube Profile
  • Set the YouTube Username with Google+

Let’s take a look at each:

Create a New Account

Don’t like your current YouTube channel? You can completely start over with a brand new one. Deleting an old channel is permanent, so you’ll want to be absolutely sure you’re ready to start over.

Before you delete your channel, you’ll want to first save any of your existing videos. To save videos, log into your YouTube account and go to My Videos. You’ll then click on Download MP4 for each account. Click on Edit to copy video metadata including title, description, and tags.

After you’ve saved your videos, the next step is to delete your current account. Click on Setting, Overview and then the Advanced button below your email address. You’ll see Close Account.

Once you’ve closed your existing account, it’s time to create a new one. In the upper right corner, you should see Create Account.

Now it's time to select a new username. You want to carefully consider your options and pick a name you plan to use for a long time.

Finally, you’ll want to optimize your site. Upload your saved videos. Add detailed video and brand descriptions to your channel, including relevant keywords.

Remember, deleting your account also deletes all of your subscribers, channels, and preferences. While you can notify subscribers your channel is changing, there’s no automatic way to bring them to your new channel. Not all of your subscribers are likely to follow.

If you do need to change your name, first try the methods which don’t involve creating a new account. Even if you only have a small following, every subscriber is important.

Changing the Name Box in YouTube

This is a simpler way to change the name of your existing channel. This technique is also how you can create a one-word name for your channel.

First, log in to your YouTube channel. In the upper right corner of your browser, you’ll see your username. Click on your username to open a drop-down menu.

Next, click on YouTube Settings. Click on Edit Profile. This will take you to your Google+ page. Click on your name in the upper left.

When you click on that link, you’ll be taken to a new page where you can enter a first and last name. This will be displayed on both Google+ and YouTube.

If you want to use just one word for your YouTube name, enter that word into the First Field. Then enter a single period in the Second Field.

If you want a two-word name, enter the first name into the First Field and the second name into the Second Field.

When your name is set up as you’d like, click Create Channel. This will change your name across all Google products, including your YouTube account.

If you decide to change your username on your YouTube account, pick a new one you plan to keep. You’d only allowed to change or delete a YouTube username once every three months.

Note that changing your YouTube username can only be done from desktop. The mobile version currently doesn’t support this change.

Set the YouTube Username with Google+

If you created a YouTube account through your Google account, then your YouTube username is likely your default name in Google. You can easily change this YouTube username to something different while keeping your Google name the same otherwise.

Using your Google account, sign in to YouTube. Click your name and email address in the upper right corner. Click on YouTube Settings.

Next to your username, click the “Revert to Username” link. You can now enter a new username. When you have a name you like, check the box and press “Create Username.”

Helpful Tips

Many new YouTubers are surprised by how complicated naming a YouTube account can be. The best advice is the simplest: Make sure the name you select is one you’re prepared to commit to for a long time – hopefully for the entire duration of your brand.

When selecting a name, you have a limit of 20 characters. Only letters and numbers are allowed. Your name will also have to be unique.

The Simple Trick to Create a One Word YouTube Name

Remember: in order to change your username to just one word, you’ll need to enter a single period into the second name box. YouTube doesn’t do a great job promoting this strategy, so many new YouTubers are unaware of it.

You want your brand name to be simple, unique and memorable. A one-word brand name is often the best option. The three strategies above give you a few options for customizing and creating a great YouTube name which you can use for a long time.
